Healthcare, nursing profession is so conditioned to just put up with the arrogance of doctors (especially surgeons) Almost every single day I see this go on. It is useless to bring it up to Management. They just say "that is the way surgeons are." They constantly appease the doctors that bully others into silence. They don't get the Big Picture.

Thanks Steve for your always astute comments. Yes, I agree that herding occurs but I don't think it occurs to the same degree as in the stock market. Aren't we dealing with far more sophisticated investors who have more on the line? One round of herding and they are out of business. They have far more incentive to get it right than the average stock market investor.

Barry,
Good points regarding government intervention and its negative impact on both the economy and the social fabric. I don't believe speculators are always a benefit to consumers though. Many commodities behave alot like financial instruments rather than economic goods.
Oil appears to be one of those where herding behavior by speculators actually hurts consumers when prices go up too high. (Naturally we prefer it when they drive prices lower). The 2008-2009 price pump and dump was a prime example. Perhaps in a real free market economy without central banking we'd see less dramatic price changes in some of these commodities.

Update: Charles Hugh Smith recently wrote:

I would characterize Mr. Bernanke as a tipsy teen with his foot mashing the accelerator pedal to the floor, supremely confident in his ability to navigate the careening car.

In Bernanke's case, the intoxicant is hubris, and man, there is nothing like a hubris high.

Like this joke says:
What is the difference between God and a doctor?
God doesn't think he's a doctor.

I'm one of the few (I know only one other) who left medical school (Harvard) for Nursing - the sleep deprivation was intolerable, and I never agreed with the culture - it was all about treater's needs and interests, and patients were generally seen as the inconvenient containers in which the 'cool' pathology could be found. Patients, we were told, owed themselves to Medical Students for the good of humanity - I never bought it. Although many students resisted valiantly, the hours and the culture were hard to resist, and I got out early. Combined with the extraordinary conflicts of interest seen throughout medicine today, it is no wonder that medicine has lost its way, poorly able to adapt to patients with more opinions and confidence. Medicine will only continue to wane in influence, prestige, and power, until it addresses its addiction to those conflicts of interest - the huge money that cannot fail to influence clinical decisions, unless we assume physicians are a different species than are we mere humans, which of course is utter nonsense. Resentment and anger towards upstart Nurses and patients will not help - the days of unquestioned authority are passing, as patients are more focused on credibility and trustworthiness. In addition, unless medicine does more to address the changing landscape and its people skills, the influence of charismatic unproven alternative healers will continue to grow at the expense of traditional medicine. Complacency will destroy any profession, given time.
